World Bank, Ghana (2022)
Matthew Owen from Kikenni Consulting led a national assessment of woodfuel supply and demand in Ghana. The team first determined total consumption of firewood and charcoal by household, commercial and industrial users. They then used friction-layer modelling to overlay the spatial distribution of this demand on a basemap of woody biomass supply, in order to predict hotspots of unsustainable biomass exploitation. Policy recommendations and interventions were developed for the World Bank-funded Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining project in the Northern Savannah Zone and Cocoa Belt.
