Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (ongoing)

Kikenni Consulting is providing long-term business development support to the EU-funded IFBEST project (‘Integrated Forest and Biomass Energy Solutions for Tanzania’). IFBEST works in 13 villages across three districts in Tanga Region to develop more sustainable systems for the production of charcoal from village-managed woodlands, from which revenues are retained by communities and re-invested in forest protection and community development projects.

Tanzania’s unique land ownership model means that villages own their land collectively, while its forest laws give residents the legal right to retain revenues from areas within the village that they choose to set aside as community forests. By developing management plans and sustainable harvesting models for these forests, and by channelling the revenues from tree products back to the communities, the project demonstrates how Tanzania’s growing woodfuel needs can be met in a more sustainable way in which local people are fully invested.
